Caption: I think this is the day Antoine (sometimes Bobby, sometimes Robert) came over because I had to leave the house and Catherine (Murphy) needed someone to help move the canvas when necessary for the "Pink Float" painting. He also got a wheelbarrow full of stones (from the woods) for Darren and Jean Jean (Pulver) to use in the rock wall they were building.

Caption: Ben came to pick up the furniture he had chosen from Eugene Carroll's house. Charlie Smith (see last entry) went with Ben to load up the furniture. He acciddentally set off the alarm and I called the alarm company and got information so they could turn it off by themselves, because I was at least a half hour away. After Charlie went home, Ben, Cathy, and I were supposed to go out for dinner with Sam Speers and Lisa Brawley. Unfortunately, Catherine's (Murphy) frozen shoulder was very painful, so we never got to dinner. We got take out Chinese food. Ben spent the night and left for Jersey City the next morning.

Caption: We were at the American Academy of Arts and Letters last night (see last bunch of entries), and Catherine's (Murphy) phone kept ringing. She answered it once and none was there. It turned out to be Benjamin Busch. He was calling to see if this was a good night to come by on his way from New York City to Sherborn NY. After dinner at the Academy, when Cathy and I were driving home, he finally got through to us. So, we arranged for him to let himself in when he got here, and that we'd see him in the morning. He probably got to our house around 1 AM. In the morning, when I got up at 7, I tried not to wake him, but that didn't work. The three of us had breakfast and visited. A little after 10, Charlie (Smith) came to work and took Cathy directly to the doctor for her B12 shot. Charlie and Cathy got back around 12 and the four of us had lunch. When we were done with lunch, Simon (Tosky) came to work (see next 2 entries). After Ben saw what I was up to in the studio and what Cathy had done, he left to head north.

Caption: Ben came over to work with Simon (Tosky) and me to put everything (folded plywood sculptures+a lot of other stuff) back into the summer studio. Everything from the studio was either in the rented Pod or on the ground covered with a huge tarp. That was following the exterminators treating the studio for powder post beetles and carpenter ants. I think he had dinner with us and left the next morning.

Title: Carl from Pestech
Caption: Carl came to exterminate the powder post beetles and carpenter ants in the unheated studio barn. He needed to do this on a day that was above freezing, even though it was in the 30's that day, somewhat above freezing, the people at Pestech thought it would be fine. In preparation for them coming Ben Keddy, Simon Tosky and I cleared out the studio. The chemicals were put on all the wood surfaces of the barn and are supposed to soak in and not only do away with the insects but also make the wood unappetizing for them in the futures. While he was here he changed all the mouse traps in the house and barns.

Caption: Charlie has come back after being away for 3 weeks. He was working on a project at the Kohler factory for an artist. He got here today after we had left to go to the dentist, so while we were gone he dismantled Catherine's (Murphy) setup for her "Becalmed" painting. After we got back we all had lunch, put away the groceries, worked on a couple of other things, and now we're working on the site.

Caption: This is Charlie's (Smith) first day here at the same time as Simon Tosky. Charlie has too many jobs and wants to get some work done in the studio so he's deaccessioning us, mostly. It looks like Simon is going to be our new assistant, so we thought it would be a good idea to have Charlie and Simon here to make the transition smoother (see last entry and next entry (Simon Tosky)). Charlie will be coming for 3 more weeks, once a week, and then on an as needed basis.

Caption: When Charlie came over this morning he did his regular routine, plus a few other things. Then, we had lunch, after which Charlie set up for Cathy's (Murphy), painting by the pond. When he was finished with that we got to work on the site, which we are typing on right this minute. Then Ralph (Arlyck) arrived, whom is filming right now (more about that later). And so, Ralph and I are going over to the studio, and Charlie is going to go to another part of this site and work on putting things in chronological order. When the site was split into two sites and reformatted, most of the entries fell out of chronological order.

Caption: Charlie and I went to a meeting with Joanna D'Pasqualle and Amy Laughlin. We met at Vassar (as we have been doing steadily for the past year+) to work on the sites. It looks like it's going to possible to launch the sites at the end of this month. I don't know why, but I haven't been photographing the meetings regularly.

Caption: Charlie got here early because he had to leave early to get to his other job. On the way, he went to the supermarket and to Rhinebeck Artist's Shop to pick up some stuff for us. He set up for Cathy's (Murphy) painting at the pond. Charlie was also working on entering captions on the portfolio site (harryroseman.com) until he hit a glitch, which a week later hasn't been solved.

Caption: Today was Charlie's birthday. He is now 29 years old. I gave Charlie a long list of things to pick up on the way, so here about a half hour later than usual. We were waiting for the man from Cranesville Block Company to come and pour concrete into the hole that Darren and Jean Jean dug. Marc Briscoe welded an apparatus with a loop on top to be put in the concrete. To that hook would be attached cable, the other end of which would be put around the trunk of the tree that's crushing my barn studio. When the guy from Cranesville finally got here and started pouring the concrete, everything went wrong. First, pebbles started coming out, and then overly thick concrete started coming down the chute, which soon got totally stuck at the top of the chute. The Cranesville guy kept hosing water up and into the chute while Charlie used a hoe to try and dig out the concrete. This eventually worked, and the whole time the Cranesville guy was hosing the concrete so what we got was a mix of too dry and too wet. I wasn't impressed with the guy's troubleshooting ability. The next day I checked the concrete and it did have small cracks in it. I am hopeful that when the tree is cable to the loop that it will hold. I think it probably will. When he left Charlie and I had pulled pork sandwiches (see next Charlie Smith entry (September 29th 2017)), after which we went up to help Cathy in her studio a little bit, and then we spent the rest of the afternoon working on the site. The reason Charlie and I work on the site together is because he types much much faster than I do.

Caption: Charlie got here at his usual 10:00 AM. When he arrived I was over in my heated studio drawing and Cathy was up back painting on the Stack painting. He thought we were still upstairs. I was wondering why he wasn't here yet. We got a nice early start this morning. So he started on his regular starting routine. That could be taking out the trash, or bringing up the trash receptacles. (Mondays would be bringing up the trash cans, Friday would be taking them down, unless I have done either. After that he would make coffee for me and for him. I don't repeat this routine in my entries because they are routine. If you are reading this entry, just assume Charlie starts with some version of these things.) He then tried to solve the glitch he ran into last time, but it was't solvable so we'll have to wait until David Sussman gets back to Vassar from vacation to see if he can fix the problem on Monday. I am typing this entry so that I can learn the new interface for the new site. Charlie is taking me through the process. I will probably often have him do it with me dictating because he types much faster than I do. For lunch today we had head cheese on toast and then a small bowl of chili. Cathy brought her sandwich up back to her studio and ate her lunch up there. I imagine we'll spend the rest of the afternoon entering data and images on this site. Charlie will probably go home at 6:00. Cathy and I will have to get ready to meet Ralph and Elisabeth (Cardonne Arlyck) for dinner tonight. I wonder if he will bring up his request for Cathy and I to take part in the new film he is doing. The subject is dealing with getting older. I have mixed feelings about taking part. I am not going to broach the subject but if he asks again Cathy and I decided we would say yes.

Caption: On his way here this morning Charlie picked up a quart of milk. While he did his regular morning routine and covered my plywood sculptures with plastic, I drew. After, he brought Cathy's painting (Pink Float) down from the coop studio to my unheated studio, where it stays while it's being worked on. Back in the house, Charlie fixed the computer (which wasn't working right) and now we're working on what you see before you. We are now going to stop for lunch, then continue on the site afterwards.

Caption: On his way here today, Charlie picked up a container of buttermilk. He did a couple of his regular things, but then Al (Nowack) arrived soon after to photograph 2 of Cathy's (Catherine Murphy) paintings. Charlie and I helped Al by moving 2 paintings back and forth. Al photographed "Becalmed" and "Painting Drawing Painting". Right before that Aaron from Culligan came to deliver salt, so I dealt with that. I made a few phone calls while Charlie packed up a pair of shoes to send back to Macy's. Now, we're working on this entry. Right after we finish this entry, we're going to have lunch, and then start the afternoon's work. - We're back from lunch. Charlie and I had pulled pork sandwiches (the pork from the Farmer's Wife in Ancram) and Cathy had a yogurt. So I think we'll spend most of the afternoon working on this site, probably with a few interruptions for other things.

I went up back with Cathy (Catherine Murphy) and Charlie researched surveillance cameras for a drawing that Cathy is planning. We're working on the site now, but we have a lot of things planned for this afternoon. We're going to leave the house around 1, go get lots of empty boxes at Arnoff Storage, do some errands, have lunch, go to the drawing studio at Vassar to set up a still life, and then back here.

Caption: I left the house at 9 for a meeting at school with John Collier and Abby Gunnels about the sorry state of the computers in the computer lab in New Hackensack, at Vassar. The meeting only lasted about 20 minutes, which was a good thing because I got to rush home to get the thumb drive I forgot to bring for my 10 o'clock meeting with Betsy (Bradley)(The new president of the college). Charlie got to our house at 10:15 and did his regular stuff, and then went to work on this site. When I got back to school for my 10 o'clock meeting with Betsy it turned out the meeting was September 18th, not August 18th. I went to Adams Fairacre Farms and when I got home Charlie helped me unpack the car and put everything away. By then it was almost time for lunch. We are now sitting at the computer and working on this site.

Caption: Charlie came to work and did various things. His lunch today consisted of chicken with almonds and green olives, with a side of sliced glazed carrots. Cathy (Murphy) and I had this for dinner the night before, and so Charlie got to have it for lunch and we had sandwiches. The beverage is apple juice.

Caption: I had a lot of small things for Charlie to do when he got here. So, I left a bunch of clues on the kitchen table (see upper left of photo). L-R Crumpled paper towel - for dumping the trash and bringing the barrels up. Bag of coffee - for brewing coffee. Plastic containers - for organizing the plastic containers and emptying the diswasher. Bay Leaf - for moving the bay leaf plant back where it belongs, and rolling up the hose near the bay leaf plant. Empty can with water in it - for the dehumidifier down in the basement. A piece of charcoal - for putting away the barbecue and the bag of charcoal. When that was all done, Charlie set up for working on the site, which we are now doing.
