Billy and Arthur's new house in Williamstown, MA. 1 of 2
-
Caption
-
Billy and Arthur bought a new house in Williamstown, MA about six months ago. We finally got a chance to meet them there and see their house. The house was designed by Charles Moore in about 1980, for a former teacher of Billy's at Williams. They hadn't moved from Pittsfield yet because they were having work done on the Williamstown house. After seeing their new house, we went out for lunch. See the next entry.

Carl Larsson's House, Falun, Sweden, A Family of Visitors on our Tour
-
Caption
-
We had to leave Richard Galloway's studio, leaving enough time to get to the Carl Larsson historical site by 4 pm. Rasimus arranged for us to hook up with a 4 pm tour in English. Right from the beginning, the tour guide's presentation seemed off. In the first room, he talked about the rarity of a woman, Karin Larsson, attending an art school in that period and having an art career. He then made some reference to that situation being the same as today. But it is not, for all intents and purposes, the same. In leaving that room, Catherine (Murphy), had enough of it and decided to sit out the rest of the tour. This opportunity gave me license to correct several misapprehensions that the guide had conveyed in his presentation (if I had done this in front of Catherine, it would have made her feel self-conscious). I tried to do so "gently." We both felt kind of bad for the tour guide. In addition to having incorrect information, he worked very hard to be entertaining. He also made Larssons' life seem trivial and talked to the group as if we were all 12-year-olds. Luckily, the couple and their children in this picture were also on this tour. So maybe they took better to the guides oratory style than we did. Considering that I hadn't previously spoken with these people and didn't know them, I would have ordinarily entered this photograph into the "Chance Encounters" section of this site. But I wanted to include this entry with the other entries from Sweden.

Catherine (Murphy) and I went down to the city so Catherine could get a haircut from Olivier and go to her galley, Peter Freeman. We also went around to see some shows. We, as we often do, drove around and took turns going in to see shows. At the David Hume exhibition, I ran into David Cohen, taking his students around to galleries. There might be more information added when I hear back from David.

We had lunch at the restaurant in the museum before dealing with business. Gunilla had to leave following lunch. So Catherine, John, and I went upstairs to the auditorium where I was to do my lecture. We did a technical check with a guy from the museum. We also installed five of my drawings for a small exhibition at the museum. We had to get back to the gallery in time to meet a reporter, who would be interviewing me for an article on the exhibition.

After the opening, Rasimus took Catherine and I back to the hotel for a short rest. There wasn't enough time to settle back into our room, so we had tea and a snack in the lobby of the hotel. Rasimus picked us up about a half-hour after he dropped us off. Then we headed to the Delarnas Museum for me to give my talk. When the talk was done, some people stayed to speak with me. So Catherine and Rasimus started looking through the museum. I joined them when the last person left. From the hotel, we headed off to a dinner the galleri arranged for me to celebrate the exhibition.

Dinner at Butterfield at Hasbrouck House, Tom's Birthday, Stone Ridge, NY
-
Caption
-
We had dinner with Tom Nozkowski, Joyce Robins, and Judy Linn for Tom's Birthday. Tom treated everybody. Right after dinner, we followed Tom and Joyce in our car because they wanted to show us something. We went to Applestone Meat Co. It was really something- a bit like the old Horn and Hardart Automats with glass doors that you can open when you have put money in a slot. Applestone's is open 24 hours a day. I am not sure of the exact story, but it goes roughly like this. Fleishers Grass-Fed Butcher was in Rhinebeck at some point and closed some time ago. They were also in Kingston, I think, after Rhinebeck. It was owned and run by a couple. Kingston also closed. Then they opened Applestone in Stone Ridge. Somewhere in all of this, the couple separated. I think the wife may have been the person who ran the Stone Ridge store. And her husband opened a store in Brooklyn. I think I remember that his father or grandfather had a butcher shop. When the store was in Rhinebeck, we went to it from time to time. I cannot vouch for this narrative, but some of it is correct. Postscript: Tom called to tell us that someone from Butterfield called him because I had left my glasses there. Judy Linn picked them up and gave them to me at the Vassar Student Majors' Critique on March 27th.

Dinner at Mercato Osteria Enoteca, Red Hood, NY
-
Caption
-
We met Portia and Jared, and Ellen and Ron for dinner at Mercato. We had to sit in the front room because they haven't opened the back room for the evening. The front room is prettier, but much louder. Though, we did manage to keep up a lively conversation by adding to the volume of the room. Nobody else except for Catherine and I had been to Mercato before. Ron and Ellen live in Kent, Ct (for the summers), and Portia and Jared live in Catskill. It seemed like a reasonable distance for everybody as a place to eat. The food was basically good. I had the Orecchiette special, which tasted very good except for the sausage, either because it had gristle in it or because the casing was much too touch made it unpleasant to eat.

Rasimus' father is originally Finnish and didn't speak much English. His mother had a little more English. Nonetheless, we all were able to communicate enough, helped by Rasimus periodically filling his parents in on what we had been talking about. After fika, Rasimus dropped us off back at the hotel. We had dinner that night in the hotel dining room. Dinner and breakfast were both smorgasbords, with a number of choices and lots of food. See the previous entry.

Fundraiser for the Barrett Art Center, Poughkeepsie. NY. 1 of 3

Some time ago, Tom Ellman asked me if I would come to a fundraiser for the Barrett Art Center. Tom is the President of the board at Barrett Art Center. He was going to see if Vassar College would buy a table. The college did buy a table, so I went to the fundraiser. There was a purchase raffle for donated artwork as well as for taking tours and dinners. They served us lunch. There were quite a few people there that I knew. See the following two entries.

Galleri Se Konst, Falun, Sweden
-
Caption

We arrived in Stockholm on Thursday, May 2nd. John Rasimus picked us up at the airport in Stockholm and drove the 2 and 1/2 hours to Falun. He dropped us off at our hotel, the Bergmastaren. The hotel, a cashless establishment (typical in Stockholm), served breakfast and dinner. The hotel contributed some of the cost for the rooms to the Galleri Se Konst. The Galleri provided the rest. It was a smallish hotel and a lovely place to stay. The next day, Friday, Rasimus picked us up at 10 am. We all spent the morning organising and hanging the show. Catherine and I gave our input into where the drawings should go. Rasimus and Gunilla did the physical hanging. When the show installation was completed, we all went to lunch at the Dalarnas Museum, the location of my lecture.
