- Dinner at Helen and Carol's 4 of 4
- Caption
- Helen and Carol had a feast of the seven fishes dinner. The feast of the seven fishes is traditionally held by Catholics on Christmas Eve. So Carol and Helen decided to have it a day before new years eve. Helen made an elaborate dinner incorporating seven different fishes. I made a lemon cake for dessert.

- Winter Solstice Party at Gret Starett Smith and David Levi Strauss' (Poetry Reading), 6 of 6 - PLAYS BEST IN SAFARI & FIREFOX
- Caption
- Gret and Levi have had a winter solstice party every year for the last 25 years. I don't remember what year we started coming to the party. It might be on this site, and if not, should be and hopefully will be. Catherine (Murphy) and I have usually met up with Tom Nozkowski and Joyce Robins at their house and followed them to Gret and Levi's. Even though it is not that far from their own house, it is hard to find. Tom and Joyce were going to the party early because Cas (Nozkowski), Hannah (Boz), and Rocket (Nozkowski) were going as well, and they had to leave early because Rocket's bedtime was 7:00PM. So we went by ourselves and got pretty close before we were lost. We drove around in the dark, up and down hills. We called Tom, and he was helpful until he wasn't. We were in front of someone's house when I turned around and saw another car. Assuming that these people could be looking for Gret and Levi's place, I drove up behind the car, got out of ours, and walked up to the car window. Mark Epstein was in the driver's seat. He said he could lead us to the party and did get us closer. We wound up on a hill to the side of a house that was not Gret and Levi's. As Mark and Arlene (and others) drove away, a large dog ran out of the house, followed by a large man. The man was quite helpful and told us exactly how to get where we were going. Mark was waiting for us a bit down the road. See the previous five entries.

- Tom and I planned for the screening of the animation students' final project to be on Saturday the 15th, between 1 and 4. We also had Pizza delivered at about 2. Most, but not all of the students had their work ready. At about 3:50, a few students mentioned that we still had a number of students to go, implying that we would never finish. I asked them if they had somewhere they had to be, and they just stared at me. I also told them we would have to stay longer, but they were getting more than their money's worth. At that point, Tom walked back into the room, and I told him we all agreed to stay longer. We got done a bit past 5. I told one student who was not happy with how the critique went that I could stay longer, and we could go over it. We talked for almost half an hour, and in the end, I think she was reasonably satisfied with the points I made. When I left, I needed to rush home because we were meeting Gabrielle and Micky for dinner. See entries of the same date in site section: "Groups", entry: "Miso Restaurant" and in site section: "Visitors," entry: Micky and Gabrielle.

- Peter, Christina, Gina, and Laura were grading the Drawing I sections. And I went to Amy Laughlin's officer to get some help to work on my Christmas present, a book for Cathy (Murphy). I was having trouble finding someone to print the book. Luckily, Amy had a good suggestion-- Artifact Uprising. I contacted them and sent all the material on Sunday, December 16 and arranged for FedEx Rush delivery which is supposed to guarantee delivery by the 24th of December. When it seemed like a reasonable time to head to the department holiday party, I went downstairs to the Jade Room. See the next three entries.

- I dropped Catherine (Murphy) off at the American Academy of Arts and Letters for a meeting she had to attend for a panel she was on. I then headed to The Guggenheim Museum to see the Hilma ef Klint exhibition. I also had lunch at the museum. I returned to the American Academy quite a while before Catherine's meeting was done. The staff offered food and drink, which I accepted and chatted with Cody Upton. I then settled down to continue reading "My Struggle" by Karl Ove Knausgaard. When the meeting ended, I saw Dorothea, Rackstraw and Philip. Cathy and I drove to pick up food for dinner and ate in the car on our drive home to Poughkeepsie.

- Tribute to John Yau, Poets House, NYC. 17 of 17
- Caption
- Catherine (Murphy) was invited to read a tribute to John Yau by Paulo Xavier at Poets House in NYC. She accepted and decided to read from John Yau's Monograph on Thomas Nozkowski. She conferred with Thomas about which section to read and asked him which paintings he would like her to show while she was reading. He sent us reproductions of four paintings. It turned out that I had met Paulo at the Queens Museum a few years ago when I showed photographs in a talk about Joseph Cornell. Tammy Nguyen had visited Didier William's printmaking class at Vassar, but we hadn't met at that time. We dropped Catherine's new drawing ("Night Watch") off at the Peter Freeman Gallery before heading to Poets House. Saturday, this close to Christmas, meant that we had to deal with particularly heavy traffic in Manhattan. I had only driven through Battery Park City one other time in the past. Poets House was in a building right across from the river. Despite all of the traffic and so many people in the street (including many people dressed as Santa Claus), Battery Park City was very quiet. Night by the river was very beautiful and felt like a different city in a different place. Poetry House was quite elegant. We got there early so that I could set up the thumb drive that had Thomas' paintings on it. I had set up both a keynote and a PowerPoint presentation. The staff at Poets House told me that they had both applications. But it turned out they could only provide PowerPoint. See the previous sixteen entries.

- Tribute to John Yau, Poets House, NYC. 4 of 17
- Art Department Meeting
- Caption
- This was a meeting for senior members of the department. One reason I took a photograph at this meeting was that a photographer came to photograph the department for the yearbook. I thought it was too bad she hadn't come when the whole department was at a meeting. Christmas is coming soon, so I presume that is the star of Bethlehem over Peter's head.

- We all met at Mole Mole before the majors and correlates critique. We discussed staffing issues for the future. Part of this had to do with what we would request from the Dean's office in addition to requesting that my line be continued. A few weeks ago, I gave notice to the Dean, the head of the department, and the President that I was retiring from school at the end of the next academic year. We had vegetarian tacos in addition to beverages.
