Neil helped me bring down cartons to the first floor to give the movers a head start. We also brought some things to the new apartment. These things were too important or fragile to give to the movers or to take over in Dennis' trucks. ------------ We were moving from 30 Poplar Street to 390 Ogden Avenue (both in Jersey City). The photographs were then taken to our new apartment.

They came over for dinner. Maria brought some materials for needlepoint and taught us how to do it. She left an empty canvas for Cathy to paint a design on it for her. Cathy and I wanted to learn needlepoint so we could make chair pillows for her parent's dining room chairs. This would be a present for their 50th anniversary. We had homemade Chinese food for dinner - shrimp toast, chicken with walnuts, dry-fried string beans, stir fry pork cubes with straw mushrooms and baby corn, coconut soup (dessert) and bought fortune cookies. Later we had tea, brownies and bought cookies.

Alison came over to pose for Cathy and then Rosemary came for dinner. This is the first time Rosemary met Alison. We had a Chinese dinner. On Tuesday, while shopping for ingredients in Chinatown in NYC, I met Virginia Lee. She is the co-author with Craig Claiborne of The Art of Chinese Cooking. She helped me buy some hard to get spices. The woman in the Country Kitchen store introduced us when she was having trouble understanding what I wanted. For dinner, we made beef lo mein, red wine sauce chicken, kung pao shrimp, dry-fried string beans and walnut date soup for dessert. They both slept over. Rosemary left after breakfast on Thursday.

On Friday we went out to dinner with Jon and Joy (Santlofer) at the Clam Broth House in Hoboken. Jon came over in the afternoon. Jon and Joy are considering buying a house in Hoboken. Cathy's eye has been hurting all day from strain so she didn't paint Alison on Friday night. Alison did all the dishes today.

They came over for dinner. We had Coquilles Saint-Jacques à la nantaise (au naturel), scallops in scallop shells or ramekins with butter and shallots, canards en cassoulet (special cassoulet with duck and hot sausages. This was a dinner that came from Simone Beck's book, Simca's Cuisine, and is an "earthy dinner for high-spirited friends", a description I don't think we managed to live up to. We also had a green salad. And for dessert, baked apple with whipped cream. The Marilyn Monroe t-shirt Jon is wearing is one he just made. He said he is going to make me two t-shirts, one with Cathy on it, and another with Gertrude Stein on it.

Jay Walsh is one of the lawyers for Helen Batchler (see August 20, 1973). Both of the lawers discussed are associates in this particular case involving Joseph Cornell's estate. They both had come to see if I could help them by providing information about Joseph Cornell's relationship with his family and his intentions for his work, and about his understanding of the legality and nature of some of his expectations. The problem is that the estate is a charity trust. And the trust is trying to take the works that Cornell's sisters and niece had in their possession. The trust was trying to prove that the works weren't gifts but were being stored for safekeeping. Jay Walsh was trying to prove the opposite.
