AAAA Robert Walker Window and Gutter Cleaning
-
Caption

Marge came with her crew to clean all the windows in the house and in the cottage, and the outside of Alec's apartment. Marge who I think now is the owner of AAAA Robert Walker still keeps it's original name. They also cleaned out all the gutters on the house and on my studio building. Rodney got here much later than the rest of the crew. As always they did a terrific job.

Ben arrived on the 14th of August and stayed at least through the 19th. He was helping us in various ways to get ready for our 50th wedding anniversary party on the 18th. Some evenings he went back to New Jersey to work for Uber, but usually he came back to sleep here except for one night; I can't remember which one. On the day of the party (the 18th) he spent about 4 hours vacuuming the Dutch barn. Some time on the other days was spent trying to get the remote control boats going as well as the remote controlled flying shark.

November 30 - December 1 --------- Friday morning Benjamin went to Davis and Langdale to pick up the works of mine that they had in the gallery. They are closing, probably at the end of December. He came up here with the work. We had lunch and then Ben and I went to the Hessel Museum at Bard to see The Conditions of Being Art: Pat Hearn Gallery and American Fine Arts, Co. (1983-2004). Cathy (Murphy) was supposed to com with us but she had a terrible chest cold so stayed home. My responses to the exhibition were somewhat complicated. It was the kind of exhibit one is supposed to like. It had historical Importance, some very good artists and was the result of two gallery dealers that were willing to put out difficult work. But, from the first few minutes in the museum the exhibition put me in a bad mood. It felt too much like a research project, like the study of history. This was, in my viewpoint a result of the exhibition itself and some of the work. Too many long explicative wall labels. Though the labels were needed. I could have been interested in much of the work in the show if there wasn't so much of it. There was something relentless about the exhibition. Much of the work seemed pedantic to me. I lost patience. ----- Ben and I next went to Rhinebeck to get a birthday present for Helen Lang . I bought two Yotam Ottolenghi cookbooks, Plenty and Plenty more. We had about an hour after we got back to the house before we had to leave for the Formosa restaurant for Helen's Birthday dinner. Cathy was hoping that staying home all day would help her feel better for dinner. It didn't but she went anyway(see in Groups, Formosa restaurant, November 30, 2018). The next day Ben did more work for us. He photographed and enlarged some pages from John Yau's book on Thomas Nozkowski. Cathy is reading from the book at a tribute to John Yau at Poets House this coming Saturday. Except for meals Ben and I worked on my book, Haircuts, Self Portraits, 1988-2018. I am designing it in InDesign, a program that Ben knows much better than I do.

A few days before this entry I called Chad at school (Vassar College) and asked him if he could come over and assess the technical situation with the surveillance cameras for Catherine's (Murphy) drawing. So he came over and went through the manual for the cameras and it's recording device, looked at the extender we installed. He came to the conclusion that we would need more equipment, that he would order and install.

I decided it was too complicated here to go, and when I called Christina to talk about it she brought up the other thing she wanted to do with me, which was to go over the images of student sculpture work from last turn. This was because she is planning the student sculpture show which will go up in a few weeks. So i suggested that she just have lunch here with me Cathy, Simon and Ben. Then we could talk about student work.

Dave from Sears

Caption

I called Sears because our freezer in the upstairs refrigerator broke. We had to throw away tons of food, both raw and prepared (by Cathy [Murphy]) this was weeks ago, but it took us a while to get a appointment. The person I spoke to at Sears told me I had no warranty, so I said "Send him anyway". About two days ago I got a call from Sears asking me if I wanted to renew our service contract. I said, we have one? The woman said we did and it will expire early next week. I renewed our service contract for the next three years. Dave came over this afternoon and said we need a new compressor. He said it would be very expensive. Then I told him we had a service contract, he said there was no sign of it on our paperwork, and that I would have to call and straighten it out. Then make a new appointment and he would have to come back almost as if he never came over in the first place. Then we could deal with the compressor. I was instructed to wait til the next morning to call, so that what happened would be reflected on his paperwork. Hopefully you will see Dave on this site in a few weeks.

Despite what was said by some people I thought IF he won he would be a long shot to beat Faso. Which I thought was very important, but nonetheless.

We have been trying to arrange a dinner here for a few weeks, First I had a cold/cough for about 8 weeks. At some point Cathy (Catherine Murphy) caught it. After rescheduling it seemed as if we were both over it and so Tom and Joyce could come to dinner. Tom has been ill so could not take a chance of getting a cold. We had also invited Eve and John and they were not that keen to possibly get colds as well. The day before Joyce called to see if Casimir could also be invited as he was coming up to visit them. Of course we said yes. In addition to Cas being an asset to any gathering we are very fond of him. For a few days Eve wasn't sure if the 17th would work for her because she was scheduled to go to CA. We would have rescheduled again but it turned out her knee was bothering her and she did not want to fly. I picked Eve and John up at the train station at close to 3:00PM. I needed to get a couple o things at Adams Fairacre Farms so I brought them with me. A bit after we got here we all settled on the porch for cheese and fruit and chicken Liver Mouse (from Raven and Boar Farm). At some point Eve left to take a walk. Tom, Joyce ands got here at 5:30PM. We put out, Tuna Tartar and rice crackers in the kitchen and also grazed on the food on the porch. For dinner we served, Brussel Sprout Salad, Monk Fish & Artichokes with Polenta (we usually make instant polenta but Cathy wanted to try the slow cooked kind, which we hadn't had for quite a while. It really made a difference in how much better it was). For dessert we had Cara Cara Oranges in Caramel and Almond Crescent Cookies. (see next two enties)

We served for an hors d'oeuvre's homemade gravlax with herb butter, capers, lemon, black bread, and gluten free bread for Elena. The first course was brussels sprouts and frisee salad (warm brussel sprouts cooked in butter, put on top of frisee and endive), Ossobuco over palenta (shown in photograph) with a gramelade (parsley, horse radish, orange zest, garlic), for desert we had Caramel oranges (from the new Christopher Kimball Milk Street Cookbook).
