We arrived at the Gault Hotel at about 5 pm. Arthur (Salvadore) and Billy (William Finn) arrived ahead of us. On our way to the Pont Champagne, we missed an exit and had to get back on the rather treacherous highway. It was snowing heavily, so it was hard to see where we were going. We got back on track in about 20 minutes. After settling in at the hotel, we headed out to dinner. We went to the Park Japanese Restaurant. I had read about it online. We got there about the time of our reservation (about 6:45pm). The restaurant was quite full with lots of well dressed young people. The design of the restaurant was awful. It looked fine, but the arrangement of the tables left no room to walk to your table without excusing yourself or bumping into the backs of chairs. The food was quite good, but we wouldn't go back here because of how uncomfortable the spatial arrangements were. See the previous entry and the following two entries.

Montreal at Christmas, 1 of 4
-
Caption

About two weeks ago, we all decided we'd go to Montreal again this year. We left at 9:30 am on Saturday morning to drive to Montreal. The plan, as usual, was to meet Billy (William Finn) and Arthur (Salvadore) at the Bear cafe in Pottersville, NY. Billy and Arthur left for Montreal from Pittsfield, MA. They left quite a bit earlier than was planned, so they wound up waiting for us at the Bear Cafe, for something like an hour. Billy had breakfast before we got there, and Arthur just had coffee. It was lunchtime for everyone. See the following three entries.

Nick emailed to invite me to Lunch. He was having a group of people to a restaurant, as he said, as a thank you. I assume a general thank you for specific or general things. This was Nick's last term teaching at Vassar because he is retiring. We ate at Le Express Bistro in Poughkeepsie.

Woodstock Art Association, Opening for "Art of the Book"
-
Caption
-
John Yau curated the exhibition "Art of the Book" at the Woodstock Artist Association. He asked both Catherine (Murphy) and I if we had work that was in some way related to the book, and if so, would we like to be included in this exhibition. We both said yes. I had a drawing that I did in a catalog from a show at the Philadelphia Print Club from 1990, where I drew a weave over a reproduction of a print of mine, and on the other page a print of Terry Winters'. Catherine had two small lithographs of open books that she did when she showed with Xavier Fourcade. He had asked her to do a couple of small prints for him to send out as Christmas presents.

Marta's new film, Her Magnum Opus, as you can see from the title of this entry, was screened this afternoon at Upstate Films in Rhinebeck. We met Marta and Daniel there, and Judy Linn also came to see the film, which was terrific and exists in the interstices between genres. We left the theater before Marta and Daniel. They are planning to meet us at our house. They want to see what work is going on there, and then we'll go out to dinner. We got to PAFA after 11 on Thursday. We would have gotten there a little earlier, but we got lost again. Unfortunately, I fixed the sizes ahead of time so they wouldn't overlap the screen, but I made them all too small. Anyway, I gave my talk, and it went reasonably well. Before heading home, we had lunch at the school cafe next door. Josh and Chie, who came back again to attend my talk, also came to lunch with us. See the previous six entries.

As I said in the last entry, we were all very noisy during dinner. Noisy enough that someone we knew at the next table surmised (by some of the things we were saying) that we were artists and that there was a connection to PAFA. So, she started talking to us, and we were talking to her, and it turned out to be Karyn Olivier, who had come to Vassar as a visiting artist about ten years ago. Both Catherine and I were very taken with her work and her talk at that time. So, we were all excited to see each other. She didn't know Didier or Kelly before then. But she was really pleased to meet them. Coincidentally, it was Lisa Collins (a colleague at Vassar) who had suggested that we invite Karen to come speak. And Lisa was also one of Kelly Morgan's readers for her thesis. See the previous entry and the following five entries.

Catherine (Murphy) and I got to Philadelphia the night of the 10th. We stayed at the Rittenhouse Hotel and had dinner the first night with Sid Sachs at Scarpetta's in the hotel. The next morning we were due at PAFA at 10:30 to get ready for Cathy's talk at 11:45. We got there late, but it didn't matter all that much. I had to resize all of Cathy's images because it overlapped the screen. Josh Marsh and Chie Fueke came to the talk. They live about an hour from Philadelphia. Clint is the dean of the school. Visiting a Sick Friend (William Finn)
-
Caption
-
We planned to go to New York City around visiting Billy (William Finn), as well as to Dr. Patrick Meere's for Cathy to have a checkup for her knee surgery. Billy was stuck at home because he fell down and broke his knee (which was operated on). But he was also waiting to hear when his ablation would be done for his arrhythmia. Arthur had been taking care of Billy dutifully. Billy got out of bed to have lunch with us at the table, which was the first time he'd been out of bed to eat since he broke his knee. The food you see on the table is Vietnamese chicken salad, which Cathy made to bring to Billy and Arthur. Billy has always loved this salad.

That day was the inauguration of Vassar's new president Elizabeth H Bradley. I got to Raymond Avenue quite early. Our washer and dryer were broken, so I had to go to the laundromat. I put my clothes in the machines, put the soap in, and the quarters. Then I went across the street the Krafted Kup to get a latte. Monica, Taylor, and Robert were in line ahead of me. After getting my latte, I went back to the laundromat and settled down with my coffee and John Yau's new book, "The Wild Children of William Blake." Then I headed off to campus for the inauguration. We had gotten to NYC earlier in the day. We picked up William Finn, and the three of us went to lunch- Billy, Cathy (Catherine Murphy) and myself. We dropped Billy back at his and Arthur's apartment. Billy wasn't feeling well and would be having surgery in the weeks ahead. So he wasn't up to joining us going to the Jewish Museum to see the Florine Stettheimer exhibit. Cathy & I then went to some more gallery shows before getting to Peter Saul's opening. Lots of people we know were at the opening. See the following entry.

Lucy's Kitchen, Saugerties, NY

Cathy (Catherine Murphy) and I went to Saugerties for a few reasons. One was to go to Cross Contemporary that had on exhibition a group show, Site/Sight, with Suzanne Caporeal, Martha Diamond, Jacqueline Gourevitch, Sharon Horvath, Ellen Kozak, Joyce Robins, curated by Ellen Kozak. While we were looking at the show, Christina Tenaglia came into the gallery. We hadn't planned to meet at the gallery but to go to her and Adrien's new (recently acquired) house in Saugerties. Christina hadn't seen the show so headed over. We were glad she did because when she led us back to her house, it was clear we would have had trouble finding their home. We visited their new place, which is a 19th-century carriage house, and it's terrific. Christina asked if we would like it if she invited Diane Dwyer to have dinner with us. We said we would, so she invited her. Diane met the four of us at Lucy's Kitchen. Dinner was very good. After that, Diana left. And the remaining four of us went to an ice cream place down the block to get home-made ice cream. We got some to go, and when we had some at home, it was very disappointing. Hard to exactly describe, but there was a thickness to the ice cream that coated your mouth almost like there was some thickening agent in it that did not belong.
