Interview at the Gallery
-
Caption
-
We got back to Galleri Se Konst in time to meet the reporter, Anders K. Gustafsson. While Anders was interviewing me, Rasimus, Catarina, and Catherine were doing the lighting for the show. I talked to Anders for about 45 minutes. He wrote an article about the exhibition that was later posted online. When we left the Gallery (Catherine, Rasimus, me), Rasimus took us to his parent's house for fika (Swedish tradition for getting together for camaraderie, and food/drink, but mostly camaraderie).

We had lunch at the restaurant in the museum before dealing with business. Gunilla had to leave following lunch. So Catherine, John, and I went upstairs to the auditorium where I was to do my lecture. We did a technical check with a guy from the museum. We also installed five of my drawings for a small exhibition at the museum. We had to get back to the gallery in time to meet a reporter, who would be interviewing me for an article on the exhibition.

We arrived in Stockholm on Thursday, May 2nd. John Rasimus picked us up at the airport in Stockholm and drove the 2 and 1/2 hours to Falun. He dropped us off at our hotel, the Bergmastaren. The hotel, a cashless establishment (typical in Stockholm), served breakfast and dinner. The hotel contributed some of the cost for the rooms to the Galleri Se Konst. The Galleri provided the rest. It was a smallish hotel and a lovely place to stay. The next day, Friday, Rasimus picked us up at 10 am. We all spent the morning organising and hanging the show. Catherine and I gave our input into where the drawings should go. Rasimus and Gunilla did the physical hanging. When the show installation was completed, we all went to lunch at the Dalarnas Museum, the location of my lecture.

Vibha Nagrath Dhingra 3/27/2019 Vibha Nagrath Dhingra, age 74, of Nashua, NH, formerly of Winchester, passed away on March 27, 2019. Vibha was born in her grandfather Lala Ralya Ram Nagrath‘s home on Keeling Road, New Delhi, India on September 21, 1944. Despite losing her mother, Jasmati Devi Nagrath, when she was only six month’s old and her father Inderjit Nagrath, when she was only four, Vibha had a happy childhood in her grandfather’s house. She and her older sister Abha, were lovingly raised by their younger brother Ranjit Nagrath’s mother Savitri Devi Nagrath and were lucky to have the love and care of a large extended family including their grandparents and many aunts, uncles and cousins. Vibha attended boarding school in the foothills of the Himalayas from the age of four. She completed her elementary, secondary, and collegiate studies at the Sacred Heart Convent School in Dalhousie. Her lifelong love of nature and her indelible connection to the mountains began there. In 1966, at the age of 22, she married Satish Dhingra and they moved, first to Canada, and then to the United States. While Satish pursued his master’s degree, Vibha got her green card and her first job, as a clerk in the computer lab at MIT. Vibha and Satish welcomed their first son, Anand in 1969 and their second son, Vivek in 1976 and just six months later, Vibha became a citizen of the United States. After living in Cambridge and Belmont, they settled in Winchester, MA in 1978. When they separated in 1980, Vibha became a single mother. After being a stay-at-home mom for many years, Vibha worked tirelessly to support her sons. She never remarried, singular in her focus on her children and her desire to maintain her independence. In 1983 Vibha completed her MBA from Suffolk University. Despite their divorce in 1986, Vibha maintained a cordial relationship with her ex-husband, until his death in November 2017. After a successful career in corporate accounting, Vibha retired in 2009 and moved to Nashua, NH. She spent the last year at Apple Valley Center in Ayer, MA where she made many friends among the staff and residents. Vibha loved animals, especially dogs. She enjoyed international travel and learning about history; she loved to read biographies and discuss current events. She had a beautiful voice and enjoyed singing classical Indian music as well as hymns in English. In recent years, she spent considerable time in her garden. She loved plants and flowers and was especially fond of peonies. Vibha enjoyed a wide circle of friends from every chapter of her life. Her two grandsons were her pride and joy. Vibha is survived by her sister Abha Gupta (née Nagrath) and her husband Promod Gupta of New Delhi, India; her son Anand Dhingra and his wife Holly (née Parker) of Nashua, NH; her son Vivek Dhingra and his wife Catherine (née Bingham) and her grandsons Nikhil and Rhys of Wakefield, MA; as well as many cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews and countless friends. Tony Shore, has asked Catherine to come to MICA for a couple of years. Tony was a student of Catherine's at Yale at least 20 years ago. So Catherine finally did say yes, and so the time came, and we headed to Baltimore on a Sunday. It took forever to get there, much longer than we had expected. We arrived late afternoon at the Revival Hotel. The MICA people set up the reservation. We had thought if we got to Baltimore early enough, we'd go to the art museum. That didn't happen. We had dinner in our rooms and rested for the evening. Catherine had to be at the Brown Center auditorium at about 11:15 am for a technical check. Her talk was at noon. Ben Busch, who was in College Park, MD working on the house that he and Tracy used to live in, attended the talk. The talk went exceedingly well. We had lunch (pictured in this entry) in a place on campus. Following lunch, Catherine did critiques with a number of students-- many more than she had planned. After the critiques, she conducted a discussion and question session with some students and faculty. I planned to go to the Baltimore Museum of Art. But I didn't think of it, and no one who I told I was going thought of it either. So when I finally remembered and arrived at the museum, it was closed-- not entirely a surprise, considering most museums I know of are closed on Mondays. I spent the rest of the time writing the first draft of a proposal for an exhibition to give to Elena Sisto. She had asked me for something in writing for a show she is working on for me. More about this later on, if it happens. If, not then this is the last you'll hear of it. See the previous entry and the following entry.

Dinner at Butterfield at Hasbrouck House, Tom's Birthday, Stone Ridge, NY
-
Caption
-
We had dinner with Tom Nozkowski, Joyce Robins, and Judy Linn for Tom's Birthday. Tom treated everybody. Right after dinner, we followed Tom and Joyce in our car because they wanted to show us something. We went to Applestone Meat Co. It was really something- a bit like the old Horn and Hardart Automats with glass doors that you can open when you have put money in a slot. Applestone's is open 24 hours a day. I am not sure of the exact story, but it goes roughly like this. Fleishers Grass-Fed Butcher was in Rhinebeck at some point and closed some time ago. They were also in Kingston, I think, after Rhinebeck. It was owned and run by a couple. Kingston also closed. Then they opened Applestone in Stone Ridge. Somewhere in all of this, the couple separated. I think the wife may have been the person who ran the Stone Ridge store. And her husband opened a store in Brooklyn. I think I remember that his father or grandfather had a butcher shop. When the store was in Rhinebeck, we went to it from time to time. I cannot vouch for this narrative, but some of it is correct. Postscript: Tom called to tell us that someone from Butterfield called him because I had left my glasses there. Judy Linn picked them up and gave them to me at the Vassar Student Majors' Critique on March 27th.

Billy and Arthur bought a new house in Williamstown, MA about six months ago. We finally got a chance to meet them there and see their house. The house was designed by Charles Moore in about 1980, for a former teacher of Billy's at Williams. They hadn't moved from Pittsfield yet because they were having work done on the Williamstown house. After seeing their new house, we went out for lunch. See the next entry.

There were a few small jobs to be done, but the main issue was unreliable water pressure. He had an idea and is going to bring a tank for us to try out and see if the pressure improves.

We met at Adam's Fairacre Farms, Poughkeepsie, instead of at the house. I started shopping and Simon went off to the Post office to mail the plastic framing clips to Sweden. He mailed them to John Rasimus for my upcoming drawing show in May. From the post office he came back to Adam's. When we finished shopping Simon headed home with the groceries and I went to CVS to pick up some medicine. After we were done unpacking the groceries, Simon and I helped Cathy (Murphy) with cooking. The three of us ate sandwiches for lunch that Simon and I brought back from Adams. Simon and I went out back to Cathy's studio to hang up her painting, "Begin Again". We also measured and found wood to extend the step between the higher and lower part of her studio, so she could move her easel and painting more to the left. We were going to build the step extension, but the track saw needed to be charged. We came back to the house and went to work on this site. If the saw chargers early enough, we might get a chance to build the step extension, before Simon goes home.

I sat next to Shane at the recent fundraiser for The Barrett Art Center on March 3, 2019 (five entries before this one). Shane and I had run into each other periodically at Vassar. Bryce Daniel, a student in his documentary film class, made a short film about me (see the Bryce Daniel entry from October 14, 2016). I had met Shane's wife, Xinran, briefly on campus. Cathy and I decided that it would be nice to meet Elena and David for dinner since we hadn't seen them for a while, and also invite Shane to see if he and Xinran would like to attend with the four of us. It seemed like a good group of people. So we all met for dinner at Mercato, which turned out to be a good fit. I think everyone had a good time. Lots for everyone to talk about. I had forgotten my camera, and the conditions for photographing with my phone weren't great. So I wound up taking some quite poor photographs. But combined as GIF, they turned out reasonably. Shane's email from later that evening mentioned that Francesco Butoni, the chef-owner of Mercato, was on the "Beat Bobby Flay" television cooking show last week. Bobby Flay won because the judges thought Francesco's seafood d'Avalos was under seasoned. Catherine had that dish, and although the seafood was perfectly cooked, the dish was under seasoned. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The following are Shane and David's email messages to me... Shane Omar Slattery-Quintanilla Sun, Mar 17, 11:23 PM (16 hours ago) to me, elena_sisto, david, Xinran Thanks Harry for the dinner invitation and thank you all for a lovely evening in Red Hook. I don't have Cathy's email so please let her know I'd love to reconnect her to Amitava, who is deep in his own drawing/painting practice right now and would love some more friends and mentors to advise him. A pleasure meeting you Elena and David -- please keep in touch. Xinran is heading off soon to Art Basel Hong Kong and won't be back until April, but I'll be around nursing my torn ACL and wrapping up the semester if anyone wants to get another meal or drink. Take care & keep in touch, Shane David Kirkpatrick Tue, Mar 19, 2:50 PM (19 hours ago) to Elena, Xinran, Shane, me Thanks for the note, Shane- It was a wonderful evening and thanks to Harry and Cathy for arranging it. I hope Xinran (and maybe you?) can come to Techonomy NYC on May 14-15. I believe my colleague Caitlin Hamilton already sent her a note with an invitation. Simon arrived here after picking up 6 bags of san from Adams fairacre farms. The sand is for spreading on ice and mud to make it less slippery. As soon as he arrived we had him come up to Catherine's (Murphy) studio to help move her painting. He did his regular morning chores. He did some sanding. Then he packaged the clips for shipping to Sweden. The clips are for hanging the drawings up for the show. We had lunch. Simon had Chile I bought and froze from Babette's Kitchen in Millbrook. Catherine and I had that for lunch last night. I had the lefter fruit salad Catherine made for breakfast this morning. After lunch Simon and i went over to my studio, we took photographs of the drawings (in a box) to be shipped to Sweden . So I could send them to Joanna at the Peter Freeman Gallery to get some advise on crating. While I was emailing information to John Rasimus (about the show in Sweden) and working on the site, Simon was measuring the mounted drawings so I could send the sizes to Rasimus for the glass to be cut. I am not exactly sure what we'll do for the remainder of Simon's day. possibly work together on the site.

Ben came for a visit on his way from Sherburne, NY to College Park, MD. He arrived wearing a Spartan helmet from the movie "The 300". He told me he wore it all the way from Sherburne to here, and that getting gas and stopping at lights was pretty interesting. I ditched the photograph I took of him by accident, Thus a spartan helmet I got from the internet. I had gone out earlier to buy Mexican sandwiches for lunch, at La Cabineta. Ben and I brought our sandwiches and one for her, up back to Cathys (Catherine Murphy) Studio. She was working on her new painting "Flight". After lunch Ben and I went to Catskill Art & Office to pick up our drawings that were mounted on foam core for my show in Sweden. He left in the mid afternoon to continue his journey.
