Lisa Collins will be department chair the year after next (Brian is going to fill in next year). Lisa thought it would be useful and productive to have a retreat to talk about all kinds of department matters and visions for the future of the department. So, Carol is a researcher in the library and ran the event, along with Lisa. Carol supplied the pipe cleaners you see on the tables because she knew there would be artists present. The retreat lasted from 9 AM to 5 PM. See the following two entries.

We all met at Vassar to sign the papers for the closing of the sale of Eugene Carroll's house to Vassar College. Peter and I are the co-executors of Eugene's will. Eugene died May 16, 2016, and we finally got to the point where we can do the closing on the house. Eugene "owned" a lease-hold house on the campus at Vassar College.

At Tom Nozkowski and Joyce Robins' House, 1 of 2

Tom Nozkowski and Joyce Robins had Cathy (Murphy), Me, and Judy (Linn) over for dinner for Judy's birthday. Hannah (Boz), Cas (Casimir Noskowski) and Rocket Boz Nozkowski came up for the weekend. We brought chopped chicken liver (which I made from the leftover liver and onions that Charlie (Smith) and I had for lunch on June 19th) and a red velvet cake. The photographs I took are blurry because I didn't realize the button on the camera had moved to manual focus from automatic. After I took the two sets of group photos of the young Nozkowski family and all of the Nozkowskis, I didn't take another one at the table because Judy doesn't like to be photographed. I figured it was her birthday. So I gave her a break. This was Cathy and my first meeting with Rocket. See the following entry.

We hadn't seen Elisabeth (Cardonne Arlyck) and Ralph (Arlyck) since they left to go to France and Italy about a month and a half ago. At dinner, they told us about their trip. They went to Nice for Elisabeth's sister and brother-in-law's 50th wedding anniversary, and then to Lake Como with friends because they wanted to see Lake Como. Ralph suddenly remembered that he forgot to bring blueberries from his garden (see visitors 2017, Elisabeth Cardonne Arlyck, June 3, 2017) Ralph brought up his film about dealing with getting older and mentioned what he wanted us to do in it. I told them about my entry for Charlie Smith (See Visitors, June 30, 2017, Charlie Smith) that morning. I had written about the possibility of Ralph mentioning his film, and the possible responses. It was all quite funny, and as per what I said that morning, we agreed to do it.

Dinner at Elena Sisto and David Kirkpatrick's
-
Caption
-
Following the event at ‘T’ Space earlier in the day, Elena and David had a potluck dinner at their house. We brought lemon squares. Suzanne (Joelsen) brought a pork loin roast, and Leslie and Dennis brought a chocolate cake. I forget what Elliot brought. Stephen (Westfall) cooked up various vegetables in the kitchen. Elena and David grilled hamburgers and the pork roast that Suzanne brought. Everyone at dinner was at ‘T’ Space in the afternoon. I had known everyone at dinner for quite some time, except for Yuri, who I thought I was meeting for the first time. Near the end of dinner, she recollected that she had crashed into my car some years ago while backing out of a spot at Vassar.

A Party at Tom and Joyce's, 2 of 6
-
Caption
-
I took the group portrait early because it seemed to be getting dark and it started to rain. More people came later, and the rain stopped. Catherine (Murphy), in Tom's studio, tried to sit on a chair. She had a plate with a hot dog in it and had put her cane down. The chair was somewhat high and had wheels. Tom's floor is polished concrete and very smooth. The chair started to slide away and Catherine tried to guide it towards the wall. But it twisted and catapulted her to the floor face down. Luckily Dennis Cardone, our (Catherine's and mine) orthopedic doctor was also at the party. He ran right over, talked to Catherine, and figured out the best way for her to get up. She had a huge lump on her head, and the bridge of her nose was bleeding. He examined her face and also her replaced knees. He thought she seemed generally OK. Dennis was totally wonderful and we would have probably panicked if he hadn't been there. Kent Sepkowitz, also a doctor was helpful, as were Joyce Robins and Judy Linn. Everyone else was very supportive. Catherine handled the whole thing very stoically. We stayed at the party for about another hour. The next morning the lump had gone down quite a lot. But a lot of black and blue as well as a black thumb had appeared. We were talking about going to the emergency room when Dennis called to tell Catherine she should go to the hospital to make sure there wasn't a blood clot or broken bones. We were in the emergency room for four hours, but there weren't any broken bones or blood clots. - emails to me, Jul 22 (9 days ago): "Ouch! I'm making a beef burgundy for tomorrow's luncheon. I hope Cathy will be feeling better tomorrow. With all of our love, A & B July 22, 2017 Hi Harry, How is Catherine feeling today? That was the biggest bump I ever saw and I thought she was totally brave about the whole thing. Nice seeing you despite the injury-- please give my love to Catherine and let her know that Kent and I are thinking of her today. Love, Deborah July 23, 2017 dear Cathy, I just want you to know i am thinking of you and i hope you are not in discomfort today. love, sylvia July 23, 2017 If we can help in any way, let us know. Sally July 23, 2017 WE hope Cathy is okay after that fall. Now that I’ve fallen myself, I may have become insanely careful but I absolutely advise getting a scan because you never know for sure, that was my experience. Also, we enjoyed seeing the painting “Harry's Nipple” again in the Freeman announcement- it really stands out as a picture. yerz, Peter and Sally July 23, 2017 Hi Cathy and Harry, just want to send a big hug to Cathy - hope the pain has gone away. I am so relieved she’s all in one piece, what a scary moment. XOXO Jeanne"
