We were in NYC for Helen's opening at Lori Bookstein Fine Art. Hayden and I reminisced about the time she came to Vassar to deliver a lecture soon after her book on Frida Kahlo was published. After the lecture, we drove to the train station without much time to spare. When we ran down the stairs at the Poughkeepsie train station the train was already leaving the station, I yelled as loud as I could - STOP!!, and quite surprisingly the train stopped and the doors opened and Hayden got on. After Tom's opening, we went to dinner at Grand Sichuan at 24th Street and 9th Avenue, NYC. We were supposed to have dinner with Tom Nozkowski, Joyce Robins, John Yau, and Eve Ashheim, but that took a different turn. John went home to pick up Eve and Cerise (who weren't at the opening). We had a reservation for six people and the people at the restaurant wouldn't seat us unless there were six of us present. Tom saw Kathy Goncharov, who he knew from Rutgers waiting for a table and greeted her. I asked her and the woman she was with if they would like to sit at our table, which would make six people again. They agreed to do that. Tom and Joyce were starting to get tired and left to drive home to High Falls. But John, Eve, and Cerise hadn't arrived yet. The host at the restaurant kept threatening to give away our table, I kept negotiating with him for another five minutes. It also turned out the host was already mad at Kathy and her friend for going to sit at another table that was not technically theirs. Eve, John, and Cerise finally arrived. And we got to get our table. Dinner was delicious and we had a good time with our new acquaintances. See the previous entry and the following entry.

Elisabeth's Birthday

Caption

We were going up to Joy Taylor's opening and asked Ralph and Elisabeth if they would like to join us and then go out for dinner. Elisabeth was leaving for France that Wednesday to deliver a paper, which wasn't quite done. We suggested just meeting for dinner, so she could work longer. We decided to meet at the Flat Iron restaurant in Red Hook. It turned out to be Elisabeth's birthday. Ralph had gotten back from a trip to Isreal a few days before. And we were interested to hear about the trip. We brought Elisabeth a present, and they treated us to dinner.
